Cafe Nova also aims to create a thriving community café and social space with a warm, friendly atmosphere and a quality of service to attract a range of users -from the international throngs of market goers at weekends, to local mums, fitness club users and community groups during the week.
Cafe Nova opened on May 14th 2012. Delicious family recipes from around the world are top of the menu at Portobello’s first social enterprise eatery run by cooks and staff drawn from North Kensington’s diverse population who are working together to develop their skills and expertise. The café project is a social enterprise that seeks first and foremost to support local people to develop employment pathways and to progress into paid employment and supplement the work of NOVA new opportunities - the registered charity that is running the project (1118890) and offers basic skills courses and pre-employment support to over 1400 people each year. NOVA new opportunities was established in 1983 and has continued to grow and develop in repines to the needs of the people it serves.
Cafe Nova is supported by Westway Development Trust (WDT). Westway Development Trust was formed in the 1970s, to take on the challenge of regenerating and managing derelict land under the A40 flyover, which had sliced through North Kensington.WDT has created the Portobello Green Project to breath new life into its amazing space overlooking the green. Westway Development Trust works to benefit the diverse local community in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea through a huge range of projects and initiatives in areas as varied as school sports, services for ethnic minority communities and adult education. We work closely with numerous community groups, in partnership with the local voluntary sector and with the Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea council. The Trust also runs Westway Sports Centre and the Portobello Green Fitness Club.
